Embrace your gray hair and stop going to the salon.

DEBT MOM WANTS TO KNOW: HOW MUCH DO YOU SPEND TO GET YOUR HAIR DONE? ALSO HOW OFTEN TO YOU VISIT THE SALON?

Do you just go in for a hair cut and blow dry, or are you going in for a cut, color, bleach, foils, balayage, root melt etc. etc. etc.

And if you’re doing a precision cut or color, how often do you have to go in to maintenance and upkeep your hair style.

Those hair appoints aren’t free last I checked.

Now the real question is, are you putting your hair appointments on your credit card?

Being in debt sucks, it’s no fun. But if you’re in debt and hitting the salon every 8-12 weeks for root touch-ups that cost $200-$300 dollars… well that’s an expense that you should rethink.

I know looking at your gray hairs in the mirror might leave you feeling less than picture perfect, but there’s a lot of really attractive people that have gray hair. It’s all in how you wear it. You EARNED those gray hairs, some of them might be from all the worrying you’ve done over your financial situation.

I’ve been embracing my gray hair for the past year. At first it was difficult to let my natural color grow in. But the maintenance and upkeep was getting to be too much. I was blonde for a while and every 12 weeks I was at the salon and my bank account was $300 lighter. Sure it looked great the first month, but my hair grows fast. At some point, I decided to take a break. Both a financial break and a physical break, to let my hair get back to a healthy state. No chemicals, dyes or bleach… I found a more natural hair shampoo and conditioner and have embraced the gray.

This is me, Debt Mom, a real live person, and yes, that’s my gray hair, shining in the sun. This is a photo from March 2026.

If you’re putting your salon visits on your credit card, and have debt, maybe it’s time to take a break. Think of how much you could be saving every year, and how much closer you could be to becoming debt free!
